Low Carb Diet—What is it?

The low carb diet, is basically limiting daily carbohydrate intake in order to lose weight and can be known as ‘reduced carbohydrate’, ‘controlled carbohydrate’, or ‘low glycemic’ diet. The low carb diet is based on the intake of no white food, which means eliminating sugar, white flour, white rice and potatoes from the diet. Proteins and fats replace the carbohydrates in a low carb diet and helps in promoting weight loss of stored fat in the body. This causes the body to use protien fat as its main source of energy by reducing the body’s insulin production.

There are many different diet plans that are based on the low carb diet, such as the Atkin’s, High Protein, Stillman, Scarsdale, Hollywood, Ketogenic and the Zone diet. The Atkin’s diet is the most popular for weight loss by many dieters and is named after Dr. Robert Atkins. The reason for the popularity of the Atkin’s diet is that it permits the dieter to eat whatever they like, as long as it does not contain any starch. This means the person dieting can eat more than they can with other types of diets. The Atkin’s diet also results in fast weight loss quickly, but is also controversial as unhealthy and unsuccessful in the long run, however there is not express proof of this.

This is a type of diet that might not be the right choice for all dieters, especially those with medical conditions that are eating special diet plans. These dieters should discuss  a low carb diet with their physician prior to changing their diet.
