Low-carbohydrate diet |
Low-carbohydrate diets or low-carb diets are dietetic programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption usually for weight control or for the treatment of obesity. Foods high in digestible carbohydrates (e.g. bread, pasta) are partial or replaced with foods containing a higher percentage of proteins and fats (e.g., meat, soy products) and a lot other foods low in carbohydrates (e.g., green leafy vegetables). This definition is typical of main sources although no universally recognized definition has been established. Such diets are generally ketogenic (i.e. they control carbohydrate intake sufficiently to cause ketosis) for example, the induction phase of the Atkins diet. Some sources, though, consider less preventive variants to be low-carbohydrate as well. No-carbohydrate diet is an extreme form of low-carbohydrate diets. This type of diet is not for the person with health conditions that are on a fixed type of diet unless they are diabetic, since this is close to the diabetic diet and can help to maintain blood glucose levels while losing weight |
