Low-fat diet

According to the USDA, a low-calorie diet – as the name implies – is a diet that consists of little fat, especially saturated fat and cholesterol, which is thought to lead to increased blood cholesterol levels and heart attack. It is significant to know that dietary fat is needed for good health, as fats supply energy and fatty acids, in addition to supplying fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. This type of diet is usually high in protein or carbohydrates, which will need to be discussed with the physician if there are health conditions present such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease.

However, in recent years the exact health profit of a low-calorie diet has been debated. A 2006 study available by the Journal of the American Medical Association argued that a low-fat diet did not reduce the incidence of breast cancer. However, this study was criticized by numerous epidemiologists for its lack of validity.
